COSATU general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi abandoned the ANC’s “good story” script yesterday and instead spoke uncomfortable truths about the state of governance, the troubledtripartite alliance and its strained relationship with union Numsa.
A defiant Vavi, who delivered Cosatu’s May Day address to a crowd of about 3000 at Port Elizabeth’s Dan Qeqe Stadium, did not try to convince workers to vote for the ANC on Wednesday despite pressure from his boss, Cosatu president Sdumo Dlamini.
This was after Dlamini told a newspaper that Vavi would be given a prepared speech to be read at yesterday’s rally.
Making it clear that he would not steer away from uncomfortable topics, Vavi repeatedly said he would “not tread lightly on issues” and workers’ challenges “would not be abandoned for the sake of peace”. – Rochelle de Kock
