COSATU general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and Numsa boss Irvin Jim called last night for unity in the federation and urged union members to attend today’s Workers’ Day rally at the Dan Qeqe Stadium in Zwide.

This came after Congress of South African Trade Unions-affiliated union members, with the exception of Nehawu and Popcru, threatened not to attend because, they claimed, the rally would be turned into an ANC campaign tool instead of being used to talk about workers’ challenges.

They vowed to instead celebrate Workers’ Day at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton. – Mkhululi Ndamase
