Platinum heist man gets leave to appeal

THE Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday granted one of the six men behind the botched liquid platinum heist in Deal Party in November 2011 leave to appeal against his conviction and sentence.

Applications for leave to appeal against their convictions and sentences were brought by five of the men – Unathi Wana, 33, of Kwazakhele, Vukile Ngcangisa, 50, of Motherwell, Mlungisi Ntsume, 37, Madoda Nube, 38, and Luyanda Njokweni, 37, all of New Brighton. They were all convicted on a string of charges, including six counts of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Wana was sentenced to an effective 30 years in jail, Ntsume to 33 years, Nube to 23 years, while Njokweni and Ngcangisa got 25 years each. - Lee-Anne Butler
