Row over renaming of airport after 'Pebco One'

THE furious families of two of the Pebco Three are opposed to Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Ben Fihla's plan to have the Port Elizabeth Airport renamed after just one of the victims, Sipho Hashe, and say they were not consulted about the proposed change.

Instead, they have questioned why the airport cannot be named Pebco Three in honour of all three – Hashe, 51, Qaqawuli Godolozi, 30, and Champion Galela, 38 – who were kidnapped from the airport in May 1985.

Godolozi's family – his son Mkhontowesizwe, and his younger brothers Aubrey and Khanyisile – wrote to Fihla earlier this year, urging the municipality to stop singling out and promoting just one of the Pebco Three. - Hendrick Mphande
