Pressure mounts on charities as number of desperate families rockets

ORGANISATIONS assisting destitute and homeless families in Port Elizabeth have been overwhelmed by the sharp increase in the numbers of people seeking help, food and shelter.

"The number walking through Red Cross doors for food, clothes, blankets or hygiene items is on the increase," Red Cross spokeswoman Coralie Peo-Swartz said. "What is even more disturbing is the number of children being affected.

"Families tell us of sleeping on the street and of being turned away by organisations that don't have resources to help." - Estelle Ellis
