Countdown to Safe Schools initiative

PRINCIPALS at schools in Port Elizabeth's northern areas are counting the days to the launch of the Education Department's Safe Schools project.

The initiative, costing about R20-million, will result in 11 schools in the area – where the safety of staff and pupils has been compromised due to gang infiltration and violence – receiving new fencing, CCTVs and on-site security guards.

The schools that will benefit are Gelvandale, Arcadia, Chatty and David Livingstone high schools and Helenvale, Arcadia, Bayview, Bethelsdorp Road, Dr AW Habelgaarn, Hillcrest and KwaNoxolo primary schools. - Alvené du Plessis
