Accused clashes with victim's family

TENSIONS ran high at the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday when several family members of murdered Rhodes University graduate Lelona Thembakazi Fufu, 24, broke down in tears and were removed from the courtroom after coming face to face with the man accused of killing her.

The 28-year-old man, who is charged with kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the murder of Fufu, also exacerbated the heated confrontation by verbally abusing her family members.

He cannot be named until he pleads to a separate charge of rape. The incident lasted about 10 minutes and the accused was later removed by court orderlies and escorted back to the holding cells. - Lee-Anne Butler
