DEMANDS for urgent action to curb gangs terrorising schools grew yesterday as banner-carrying parents, pupils and teachers took to the streets.

As several schools in northern neighbourhoods of Port Elizabeth closed their gates in protest, teachers carried placards saying, “The Department of Education are slackers”.

In the same protests, parents toyi-toyied, shouting “No to violence”, “We want peace” and “Leave our kids alone”. Alvené du Plessis. Additional reporting by Zandile Mbabela
