No wedding bells for couple at Home Affairs

THE Department of Home Affairs is investigating why a Port Elizabeth man who tried to set a date for a civil union, was turned away by a senior official at its offices in North End.

Lance Ledingham said he felt humiliated and frustrated two weeks ago when he was told the office did not conduct same-sex marriages. He said he was informed of this by a manager on March 29 after standing in the queue for an hour and a half to set a date for his marriage to his partner of 22 years, Craig Durant.

The Eastern Cape Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Intersex Organisation has also expressed its outrage, saying this was the third reported case where a couple has been turned away from the same office in the past three years.
