Fuel price hikes lead to spike in taxi fares
By Dorette De Swart - 11 April 2014
Commuters take note – taxi fares are increasing by R1 across Nelson Mandela Bay today due to the continuing hikes in fuel prices.
And the city’s taxi bosses are already looking at increasing prices again, depending on the next spike, which is expected next month.
Port Elizabeth and Districts Taxi Association chairman Sandi Mbona said a R1.50 increase was mooted, but taxi owners felt commuters’ pockets would be too hard-hit.
“We usually hike prices once a year, but were forced to do the increase now . . . and the price will go up again soon,” he said.
