Police step in as Coega land protest turns ugly

A WOMAN was injured as more than 100 Wells Estate residents protested along the Coega Industrial Development Zone’s (IDZ) Neptune Road just outside Port Elizabeth yesterday.

The residents, who set alight a truck tyre while singing revolutionary songs, are demanding to be moved back to land they vacated years ago on the understanding that they would be compensated.

Police from three stations – Motherwell, Swartkops and Kwazakhele – had to be called in to stabilise the protests which turned violent when police tried to prevent about 150 protesters from burning the tyre.
