DA’S landslide poll win sends Slabbert packing

THE DA’s landslide victory in Nelson Mandela Bay’s Ward 1 by-election has vindicated its “principled decision” to expel Stanford Slabbert from the party for distributing a racist e-mail, DA deputy provincial leader Bobby Stevenson said yesterday.

The DA took a lot of flak after Slabbert’s expulsion last year, with many people saying the sanction was too harsh.

However, the criticism did not carry over to the poll, with the DA receiving 85.7% of the votes.

A disappointed Slabbert, who was the ward councillor for about eight years and stood as an independent candidate, managed to attract only 9% of the votes.
