R15m plan to remove city statue

NELSON Mandela Bay ratepayers are in for a royal rates shock if plans to remove a historic statue in the Port Elizabeth city centre get off the ground.
Having enjoyed a commanding position over the city hall for more than a century, the historic Sicilian marble statue of Queen Victoria could be thrown from its pedestal outside the Main Library by Freedom Day, on April 27, if municipal plans around celebrations for the 20th anniversary of democracy get the go-ahead.
The staggering R15-million plan to remove the statue and replace it with a “20 years of freedom” commemoration plaque came to light in a startling disclosure by a well-placed municipal source yesterday.
