Fighting crime with phones

AN armed robbery victim is determined to take back control with his hi-tech smartphone app which the Port Elizabeth man hopes will help fight crime around the world.

The app, Friend Street, will be launched globally today. It has map and tracking software and is designed to pinpoint the location of the user, in the event of being attacked. The app also sends emergency signals to nearby friends, family and authorities.

Friend Street, which will be available on Windows 8, Android and Apple smartphones at about R16 a month, is the brainchild of Glenn Grant, 56, a Mount Pleasant father of two who developed it to address crime in areas as diverse as farming communities in South Africa, to the corporate sector. - Gareth Wilson
