Strokes, diabetes close in on TB as No1 killer

TUBERCULOSIS remains the No1 killer disease in South Africa and the Eastern Cape but the province is one of only two where strokes are on the rise as the second most prevalent cause of non-violent death, Stats SA said yesterday.

Statistics for Nelson Mandela Bay also showed an alarming increase in the number of deaths due to diabetic complications, the second most prevalent cause of natural deaths in the region after TB.

The second biggest cause of all deaths in the region was violence and trauma with 569 dying violent or accidental deaths. In Nelson Mandela Bay, 6242 people died in 2011. -
