Ex-store owner up for theft

A RICHES to rags tale of a Port Elizabeth businessman who fell into so much debt he allegedly resorted to stealing Pick n Pay gift vouchers, played out in court yesterday.

Kazimierz Szczawinski pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft totalling R135000.

Szczawinski bought into a Pick n Pay franchise in 2004, a deal which ultimately landed him in so much debt, his company, Meadowood Trading 7 Pty (Ltd), was liquidated in the Port Elizabeth High Court in 2011.

By February 2009, the Pick n Pay at Times Square in Walmer had racked up debt of more than R1.5-million under Szczawinski's leadership. -
