THE ANC painted Uitenhage’s western suburbs yellow yesterday, with Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula leading the pack in a door-to- door campaign ahead of the May 7 elections.

Mbalula’s visit came as angry protesters took to the streets and burnt tyres on Thursday and Friday, complaining about the slow pace of housing delivery and demanding land to build shacks.

Tensions simmered again yesterday as a small group set alight rubbish bags strewn across the road.

A strong police presence ensured the campaign programme was not disrupted. – Rochelle de Kock
