Bonus backlog huge headache

RATEPAYERS may have to fork out thousands of rands in performance bonuses for senior Nelson Mandela Bay managers who have long since left the municipality, due to a massive backlog with staff evaluations.

The municipality has had to dig as far back as 2005 into its archives to conduct performance appraisals on the then-executive directors, who are no longer on the city's payroll.

City manager Mpilo Mbambisa, who was presenting the metro's progress report at the Eastern Cape MuniMec meeting on Friday, said performance evaluations were "a huge problem".

"When the previous city manager [Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela] was appointed last year, she started doing the evaluations and had to dig back to 2005. -
