Koukamma tap water could pose health risk

RESIDENTS relying on tap water from the Koukamma Municipality in the Storms River and Kareedouw areas risk falling ill.

Civil rights organisation AfriForum tested the water supply in the region as part of its national Blue and Green Drop Branch Project (DBP).

The project aims to make communities aware of the fact that safe drinking water is an essential element of any functioning community. The organisation tests drinking and purified sewage water at AfriForum branches around the country.

AfriForum head of environmental affairs Julius Kleynhans said the full test results, conducted by a laboratory accredited by the South African National Accreditation System, would be available next week. Samples indicated levels varying from 10 to 23 units of E.coli per 100ml of water. – Tremaine van Aardt
