Bay aviation takes off

NELSON Mandela Bay's blossoming recreational and commercial aviation industry is poised to scale new heights with a R12-million private airfield on the cards for the Theescombe area.

While still in the assessment and review stage, the airfield project, to be named Wings Park and modelled on a similar highly successful initiative in East London, will be based on a portion of Kragga Kamma Farms, near Lakeside Road in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Touted as a very low-key, "green" development with a minimal environmental footprint, the proposed airfield is expected to host 25 aircraft hangars individually owned by a consortium of 25 Nelson Mandela Bay aviation enthusiasts and primary benefits will include reducing congestion at the Port Elizabeth Airport while stimulating the aviation industry in the Bay. -
