ANC plan for R5m celebration foiled

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will spend R1.4-million on the 20 Years of Freedom celebrations after the ANC failed yesterday to get the nod for the city to cough up R5-million for next month’s events. The ANC did not have the 61 councillors needed in chambers to pass the budget it wanted. This left it at the mercy of opposition parties, who either rejected the idea of spending R5-million on the celebrations or abstained from voting.

Several departments have cut their budgets to fund the celebrations.

The ANC was dealt another blow when the DA walked out during proceedings, leaving the council unable to rubber-stamp the election of ward committees, which mayor Ben Fihla had earlier said would be inaugurated on Friday.
