Ambulance staff sacking ruling challenged

THE Eastern Cape Health Department has asked the Labour Court to overturn a ruling that it was too harsh in dismissing five senior officials, including a former Port Elizabeth emergency vehicle fleet manager, because they used an air ambulance to fly to a soccer match.

The department is also objecting to an order that the five former officials be paid a collective R3.1-million in compensation.

The ruling by the Public Health and Social Development Sectoral Bargaining Council was handed down last month, but Eastern Cape Health spokesman Siyanda Manana said they had asked the Labour Court to overturn it. -
