Power cuts can be matter of life and death

LOAD-SHEDDING, for some, is a matter of life and death. And Uitenhage resident Nicolas Groves knows that only too well.

His mother, Rose, suffers from congestive heart failure and relies on a home oxygen concentrator machine to keep going.

The machine is powered by electricity, supplied by Eskom.

"When they cut the power there is a lot of commotion, and an uncomfortable din from the machine's alarm. This adds to the flurry of actions to be taken. We pay our municipal bill on time, every time or well before it is due as we cannot afford even a small interruption in power," Groves said.  - Estelle Ellis and Jan-Jan Joubert
