Heist accused claim they backed out of plan

THE Port Elizabeth High Court heard closing arguments yesterday in the case against six men accused of orchestrating the planned theft of millions of rands of liquid platinum in Deal Party, Port Elizabeth, in 2011.

Unathi Wana, 33; Mlungisi Ntsume, 37; Madoda Nube, 38; Luyanda Njokweni, 37; Xolani Nanto, 37; and Vukile Ngcangisa, 50, are charged with murder, theft, robbery and possession of firearms and ammunition. The murder charges relate to six alleged members of the gang killed during a shootout with the police.

Charges against a seventh accused, Lonwabo Neti, 28, were withdrawn after the court found there was not enough evidence linking him to the crimes after the state had finalised its case. -
