PREGNANT women are being treated on mattresses on the floor of Port Elizabeth’s Dora Nginza Hospital due to a chronic shortage of hospital beds.

The crisis has been caused by an increase in patients from the rural areas due to the collapse of basic health care there.

Eastern Cape Health Department spokesman Siyanda Manana said the “floor beds” were “the only solution to a desperate situation”.

But the Eastern Cape Health Crisis Coalition’s Kwazi Mbatha said it was a violation of patients’ rights. – Estelle Ellis

It is with great sadness to see such things after 20 years of “Democracy”,it makes you think is this what our Grandparents and parents fought for? Our Government is failing us big time,it is now time for change within the system as it doesn’t seem like we have leaders ready to improve basic conditions of the poorer. Do we really have people to take this wonderful and potentially good country forward? I doubt that unless someone proves me wrong…

Cause all our money goes to “zoom-A”, and all the ministers driving luxury cars and staying in Mansion, while other cant even effort basics. And why our state hospitals are in this state…
