New varsity complex gets OK

COUNCILLORS have given the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University the go-ahead to build a "one-stop facility" with student accommodation, lecture halls and computer labs on its Second Avenue campus cricket field.

The approval was given despite objections from nine Summerstrand residents, who said the development would lead to increased crime and traffic volumes.

The university applied to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for special consent to use its cricket field to build the academic node with student lifestyle facilities and residential accommodation.

The application was approved by the human settlements portfolio committee yesterday, but it still needs approval from full council. -
