Heartbreak for 'very poor' land claim scam victims

ALMOST 1000 extremely poor Uitenhage residents were cheated out of their hard-earned cash in a land claim scam allegedly run by a middle-aged couple from the town.

John Pietersen, 62, and his wife, Margaret, 55, convinced residents from Kamesh, Rosedale, Blikkiesdorp and Gamble to fork out about R80000 in total, the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court heard on Wednesday. Applications for land claims officially closed on December 31 1998, and the residents never had a legitimate claim.

However, the Pietersens allegedly convinced the men and women, some elderly, that they still had a shot at a payout.
