Cigarette van hijacked in PE

A BRITISH American Tobacco panel van was hijacked and the driver held at gunpoint in Gutch Street, Gelvan Park, at about 10am yesterday.

Police spokesman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the driver had offloaded boxes at a shop.

"A car with four men inside pulled up and they jumped out. The driver was held at gunpoint and forced to hand over the keys. They then put him in their car and two men drove the panel van. They drove to Speelman Street [in Parkside] where another vehicle stopped," she said.

"The panel van was emptied and the driver dropped at the corner of Aubrey and Kobus roads in Gelvan Park."

Janse van Rensburg said the man then alerted a passerby, who called the police. The panel van was abandoned in Speelman Street. A case of armed robbery and hijacking is being investigated.– Gareth Wilson
