Freedom bash to cost council R5m

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will ask the council to approve a budget of R5-million for its part in the countrywide 20 Years of Freedom and Democracy celebrations when it meets next week.

This means several departments will have to scale back on service delivery projects to be able to fund the commemorations, as the municipality initially only budgeted R1.4-million.

At a joint mayoral and budget and treasury committee meeting yesterday, budget and financial planning director Selwyn Thys said: "In the adjustments budget it currently refers to an amount of R1.474-million for the Freedom Day celebrations. An item is being prepared for next week's council meeting to increase the amount to R5-million.
