Fisherman drowns near Kowie harbour

A FISHERMAN drowned near the Port Alfred harbour entrance yesterday after falling off a commercial fishing boat.

National Sea Rescue Institute Port Alfred station commander Juan Pretorius said the volunteer rescue crew was activated at about 1pm. Police and a private ambulance service also responded.

He said the man's body was floating near the breakwater. It was brought to shore by NSRI rescue swimmers. The man, whose name has not yet been released, is believed to be about 50.

"It appears the fishing boat may have been broadsided by a wave while entering the channel of the Kowie River mouth, and the man fell overboard," Pretorius said. – Herald Reporter
