Defence force 'job' keeps Bay father penniless, unemployed

THE quest of an unemployed Port Elizabeth father of three to uncover how he ended up on the SANDF's payroll has left him with more questions than answers.

More than 10 trips to the Defence Department's headquarters in Pretoria, a visit to the public protector's office in Bhisho, a turn at Luthuli House and letters to the military ombudsman have all come to nothing.

Mthobeli Mlawu, 45, of Kwazakhele, has been "employed" in the army since 1997, but there is one problem: he is not the one drawing a military salary, he says.
