Teachers' strike looms over bonus gripe

JUST over a month into the school year, the SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) intends to call a strike over the five-year deadlock over teachers' annual incentive bonus.
Sadtu general secretary Mugwena Maluleke said yesterday the union had given the Education Department the required 30-day notice prior to a strike.
The union is disgruntled that teachers receive an annual 1% incentive bonus, while all other public servants receive a 1.5% bonus. This bonus is in addition to annual increases.
