Minister hesitant on SABC action

COMMUNICATIONS Minister Yunus Carrim said yesterday he was consulting senior government legal experts over the future of Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the troubled acting chief operations officer of the SABC.

Carrim said the advice was being sought in an attempt to avoid a potential court battle with Motsoeneng because, as minister, it could be problematic for him, in terms of the Broadcasting Act, to remove SABC staff from their jobs.

This follows public protector Thuli Madonsela's finding, announced this week, that Motsoeneng had been lying about his qualifications from as far back as 1995.
