Man in court after policeman killed

A SUSPECT in the murder of a police officer and the attempted murder of another appeared in the Alexandria Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Andile Makeleni, 37, was allegedly part of a group who shot at police officers at Sundays River after a chase along the N2 in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sergeant Thembile Gulwa, 58, was shot in the head and died, while Warrant Officer Jaques Nell, 42, was admitted to hospital with a bullet wound in the shoulder and later discharged.

Seven suspects sped off in a Corsa bakkie, which was later found, abandoned in a bushy area, with a firearm and ammunition on the back.

Makeleni will appear in the same court again soon for a formal bail application.

Meanwhile, various police units, including the K9 unit and the Air Wing, are helping in the search for a number of other suspects.
