Crack unit to fight perlemoen poaching

Gareth Wilson

A PRIVATELY funded undercover task team has been deployed along the Nelson Mandela Bay coastline to clamp down on the illegal perlemoen trade.

The move has been hailed by police and marine experts as a new and effective way to deal with the illegal poaching that threatens the existence of the species and marks the first privately funded unit of its kind in Port Elizabeth.

Details about most of the initiative, including who is funding it, are still under wraps because of security concerns and threats already made to members by poachers.
