Van driver killed in hail of bullets

FRIENDS and family cried uncontrollably when they arrived at the scene where a man was shot dead while delivering bread to a spaza shop in Bethelsdorp yesterday.

Ben de Jager, 52, had just stopped his delivery vehicle outside the SMM Superstore, on the corner of Booysen Park Drive and Montague Road, Port Elizabeth, when 10 armed robbers started shooting.

"I heard shots, probably five or six, and I started running," a schoolboy, who was passing by the shop on his way home from Booysen Park Primary School, said.

"I could not see anything, because I was too scared to look back. I just ran."
