Warders work in fear after brutal prison stabbings

PRISON warders in King William's Town's Correctional Services facility fear for their lives after two of their colleagues were brutally stabbed by inmates during separate incidents last week.

On Monday, a warder was attacked by an inmate and stabbed in the face and chest with a smuggled knife and on Thursday an inmate used a sharpened broomstick to viciously stab another warder.

Now prison officials were fearing for their lives, saying their superiors failed to introduce precautionary measures to ensure their safety after the attacks, Toney Plaatjies, national president of the South African Correctional Services Workers' Union (Sacoswu) said.

He said attacks on warders were getting "out of hand" in the province.
