Water use alert issued

AS temperatures soared in the past month, record levels of water consumption were recorded for January, the municipality says.

Spokesman Kupido Baron said 312 megalitres of water had been used each day last month. There are 1000 litres in a kilolitre and 1000 kilolitres in a megalitre.

Baron said the municipality expected the usage this month to reach an alarming 320 megalitres a day as peak consumption normally occurred in February.

Consumption in January last year was 291 megalitres a day and 296 megalitres a day in February.

"Residents are reminded to use water sparingly as historically we have frequent water shortages, normally once every four years, because of drought cycles."
