Fury in rape bid case

THE withdrawal of an attempted rape case in Port Elizabeth because of a shortage of interpreters has sparked outrage among prosecutors, law enforcement officials and crime experts. They said it was an example of how the justice system was failing victims.

And the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has now admitted it is a widespread problem provincially as there are no foreign-language interpreters on contract or working full time.

Instead, interpreters are assigned "as and when needed by the court", according to department spokesman Advocate Mthunzi Mhaga.
