YOUNG people in the Kouga can look forward to loads of fun and activities in future.
A group of Jeffreys Bay residents have formed an organisation called the Sarah Baartman Youth Development (SBYD) aimed at keeping the youth off the streets.
SBYD, which started operating last month, are waiting for their registration as a non-profit organisation at Social Development to be cleared.
They plan to organise fun events to divert young people's attention away from substance abuse and gangsterism. They recently worked with Jeffreys Bay Police to organise the celebrations for Youth Day at the Pellsrus sports field. It was their first and biggest event to date.
About reaching out to young people in Kouga, Clinton De Vos said: "We are trying to get the youth off the street and interested in many different things.”
They are trying to organise events on a monthly basis.
They hold their meetings at a member's house thrice a week. The meetings are open to the public.
"If you have any good ideas we can use, you are welcome to share them, ” De Vos said.
Ultimately they want to be able to "reach out to the needy and feed the hungry”, he added.
They depend on sponsorship for their events. They are looking for more sponsors as the group will be venturing into other avenues to uplift the community.
SB Youth Development board members are Gavin Natal, Clinton De Vos, Blanche Potgieter, Cheraldine August, Keawane Hammond, John Najoe, William Titus, Steven Bibb, Jerome Plaatjies and Jacques Jenneker.
