Rotary facilitates exchange between top schools in India and Grahamstown

A ROTARY Friendship Exchange will enable two boys from St Andrew's College in Grahamstown to spend six weeks at a top school in India, while two boys from that school spend time at St Andrew's later this year.

The contact was established by Kenton-on-Sea Rotarians who visited Chandigarh and Panchkula in North West India on a Rotary Friendship Exchange in November 2011.

Captain AJ Singh, a Rotarian, hosted the South African Rotarians at his home in Chandigarh and took them to see his school, Pinegrove. He and his wife, Samiksha, visited South Africa recently and Kenton Rotary president Colin Armstrong took them to Grahamstown for the day to see St Andrew's and meet some of the pupils.

Two boys from St Andrew's College, Rahul Gopal and Frank Norval, will go to Pinegrove School in the foothills of the Himalayas in North West India on a six week exchange visit in August/September.

Two boys from Pinegrove School will attend St Andrew's for six weeks in March/April.

"This exchange is very exciting because it affords the boys a chance to embrace other cultures, to learn from them and to broaden their horizons,” said Kenton Rotary public relations officer Brigid Mackay.

The Singhs also visited DSG in Grahamstown and a further exchange of girl pupils between DSG and Pinegrove is in the pipeline.

Captain Singh, a retired army officer, is the headmaster and executive director of Pinegrove School and his wife is the school administrator.

The captain founded the school in 1991 and has played a major role in its development. It has been recognised as one of the top 15 schools in India. The Parent Teachers Association of India awarded him the National Award for Excellence in the field of education.

"Among many other things, Pinegrove makes a sincere effort with the help of modern educational techniques and psychological handling to shape the children into responsible citizens, having a sense of fair play, respect for their parents, loyalty for their country and a love for all mankind,” said Mackay.
