The crew - which included U10 micro-grom Kye Macgregor and over 60s veteran Jerome Boulle - surfed small waves at two different breaks in the longboard and shortboard trials, hoping tomake the EP provincial teams for the SA Championships in a few months time.

Nine-year-old Kye made it a clean sweep at the SA Grom games’ team trials when he won his third straight competition in a row at the Pipe and looks a sure bet to represent the provincein Port Elizabeth over the Easter weekend, using a new board he scooped from local shaper Anton Wiersma.

With more than 400 boards under the belt, Wiersma put all his skills to the test when he shaped hissmallest board ever - a five foot beauty hedubbed the "grommet comet" - as part of a sponsorship deal for the young Kowie ripper.

After his first surf an excited Kye called Wiersma and told him he was "the best shaper in the world".

The grom team is expected to be announcedin the next few days.

Kye’s older brother Cuan, 15,placed second in the EP Longboard trials to go with his win at the previous trial and has been earning widespread praise for his red hot surfing in the longboard division.

Their dad, David, and Justin Maddocks scored a one-two inthe over 40s division with Macgregorscooping top spot using a board he borrowed from Maddocks.

Jerome Boulle won the over 60s division and all five surfers are well placed to make the provincial long- and shortboard teams.

The surfers will be practising their moves this weekend at the year’s first King of the Kowie competition at East Beach. The competition, organised by the Kowie Boardriders Club, will take place either on Saturday or Sunday depending on the quality of the waves.
