"Winning this award is a big honour for our branch and the staff members. It is proof that providing service with a smile and going that extra distance for our customers can be rewarded,” said branch manager Tommy van Rooyen.

"We would like to thank our loyal customers for making this award possible and for your confidence in our branch,” he said.

Post Office employee Phillip Dike won an individual award for customer service. There were only 12 such awards in the entire Eastern Cape.

"Happy cannot describe how I'm feeling,” he said.

Van Rooyen said he was proud of Dike who was "green behind the gills” when he came to Port Alfred from the Post Office in Alexandria.

"I'm proud of what he has achieved over the last couple of years,” said Van Rooyen.

They both agreed the branch would have to keep up the good service or improve on their efforts to meet expectations.

Winners for the operational excellence awards are audited every six months and the auditors use a nationally standardised operational checklist. A minimum score of 80% is required to qualify for any award. Individual customer service awards are identified by customers who complete the form available in branches. The number of acknowledgements and complaints are also taken into consideration.

"Now in its second year, the awards were established to acknowledge and reward outstanding operational service,” said acting general manager for consumer service, Fanie Krynauw.

"These awards have proven to inspire, motivate and encourage teamwork, it also gives us an idea of the customers experience within the various branches and where improvement is needed. We are proud of Port Alfred Post Office and trust that they will continue to provide an outstanding service to their community,” he said.
