Rural school drops science

A SHORTAGE of science teachers in the Eastern Cape has forced one rural school to dump the subject and divert pupils to study economics, despite having a state-of-the-art laboratory donated to boost maths and science at the school.

While Paterson’s Sandisulwazi High School principal Sedrick Gouza denied the school was scrapping physical science, a teacher and at least three pupils independently confirmed the subject was being phased out.

This occurred after its science teacher moved to another school in Kirkwood last June.

A maths teacher filled in until the end of last year but she refused to continue teaching more pupils this year, saying she was over-burdened.
