Winning visit puts Bay couple on top of world

A PORT Elizabeth man’s insistence on visiting his favourite site in Cape Town led to his being the 23-millionth visitor to the Mother City’s iconic landmark, Table Mountain, via the cableway.

Thamsanqa Welcome Peter, 62, of KwaMagxaki, stuck to his guns when wife Phindiwe, 61, tried to convince him to give the mountain a miss and explore other tourist attractions in Cape Town.

“I tried talking him out of going to the mountain because we have been to it a few times. But he was adamant we should go, saying perhaps there could be something new we hadn’t seen before,” Phindiwe said.

So the couple and their two cousins headed to the landmark on Friday. As they were standing in a queue to purchase a cable car ride, they were pulled away by Table Mountain Cableway marketing manager Collette van Aswegen.
