Yako paid R27000 a day to run G'town

ADMINISTRATOR Pam Yako is being paid up to R27000 a day to fix Grahamstown's collapsed Makana Municipality.

For the first three months of Yako's six-month contract – which began last month – the government is paying her R327882 a month for a three-day work week.

She would be paid slightly less for the second half of her contract – R286666 a month, Cooperative Governance Minister Pravin Gordhan said in a parliamentary reply.

This makes Yako the highest paid municipal administrator in South Africa.

In total, she will earn a staggering R1.84-million in six months, just shy of the R2-million paid to Nelson Mandela Bay city manager Mpilo Mbambisa for a full year.

She is only required to work three days a week, as stipulated in her contract.

This means that for the first three months to December, she will earn about R27000 a day for 12 days of each month. - Rochelle de Kock
