Schoolboy walks off with 21 awards

IN a rare achievement, a Muir Primary School pupil recently walked off with 21 awards at his school prizegiving.

The 21 academic and extramural awards Grade 7 pupil Hashil Karsan received included 12 trophies.

The 13-year old also received a bursary covering his tuition next year for coming first in his grade.

"Going on stage and receiving all those accolades was an overwhelming experience. I felt good, excited and proud," Hashil, who was also headboy, said.

Hashil, who hopes to pursue a career in mechanical engineering or information technology, spends most of his spare time on his computer.

His awards include the Frans Condradie trophy for Afrikaans, the Fenner Barnard Cricket Trophy for most outstanding batting achievement and the Robert Daniel Trophy for the Best Senior Public Speaker.

Hashil's father Manoj Karsan said they were proud parents.

"He isn't one to procrastinate and would complete all necessary tasks immediately.

"He's just one of those people who wants to do everything correctly," Karsan said.

Principal Nigel Hopley said Hashil was a true ambassador for the school.

"It's not the first time a pupil has received so many awards in one night but it's definitely not something that happens every day," Hopley said.

"We are very proud of him as he is a delightful, humble young man and always has a smile on his face." - Chanice Koopman
