PE Airshow second best in SA

BAYWEST Mall in Port Elizabeth has proven it has what it takes to compete with the big boys of the airshow circuit when it took the runner-up spot at this year's National Aeroclub Awards.

The awards ceremony took place on Saturday evening at the Air Force Base Swartkop in Pretoria, following Port Elizabeth Airshow's losing out to the Durban Land, Air and Sea Festival.

In September, the developers of the R1.7-billion Baywest Mall threw their weight behind the 18th annual Port Elizabeth Airshow hosted on the grounds of the SA Air Force Museum Port Elizabeth, behind the Port Elizabeth Airport.

Airshow committee member and aerobatic pilot Patrick Davidson said it was an honour to receive the award, considering the show relied predominantly on donations and sponsorships for funding.

"The Durban show has millions pumped into it, whereas Port Elizabeth worked on quite a modest budget. It makes the achievement all the more impressive. In terms of airshows, it was a great spectacle,

"There are two factors that set the airshow apart. Firstly, that it is hosted at an airport and, secondly, the overwhelming support from PE residents who came out in their thousands," Davidson said.

"Now the real challenge begins. We'll have to be well prepared for next year, with the organisers forced to think out of the box to avoid the show becoming repetitive."

Passenger planes, fighter jets and helicopters could be seen circling above Port Elizabeth on the weekend of October 25, all in aid of the MTR Smit Children's Home – the beneficiaries of the event.

Baywest Mall marketing manager Samantha Hewitson said being part of the Bay community had always been a priority for the company.

"This was a logical move for us, especially as the proceeds go to charity.

"The fact that the organising committee has been recognised nationally for the amazing job it does in putting together such a mammoth and spectacular event is a feather in the cap not just for Baywest Mall, but for the entire Bay community."
