Gran caught up in dispute over house

CIVIC association Sanco has intervened in a messy property deal in which a Uitenhage grandmother   has been served with an order evicting her from a house she thinks she owns but a lawyer says is his.

Nomathamsanqa Magwa, 54, has lived in the house for 23 years.

Armed with a stamped Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality "surrendering of dwelling" document, Magwa believes this entitles her to ownership of the house at 4 Rebe Street, KwaNobuhle.

According to Magwa, the late Thembile Kota surrendered the house to her in return for a plot of land and R50000 in 2003.

After she was served with an eviction order last week, the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) protested outside her house to bring attention to her plight.

"The house is mine. I have the municipal documents to prove it. I feel hurt and I can't eat or drink because of what is happening," Magwa said. - Hendrick Mphande
