Metro book pays tribute to pioneers, community leaders

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has published a book honouring those who contributed to the growth of New Brighton and Korsten.

Pillars of Korsten & New Brighton, compiled by the Wall of Honour Committee members of the New Brighton and Korsten libraries, honours pioneers and community leaders who distinguished themselves by their contribution in various fields including politics, medicine, sport, religion and business.

Author Mbulelo Nzo, who also chairs the committee, said compiling the book had not been easy as some family members were no longer in Port Elizabeth and others were dead.

"We have written about 140 people from Korsten and New Brighton who we consider to be pillars of these two places.

"The idea came after we were approached by community builder Mike Pantsi with the suggestion of having a wall of honour at the New Brighton library. His motivation was that not only the future generation, but also tourists, need to know about people who contributed to the wellbeing of the township," Nzo said. - Yoliswa Sobuwa
